Why Joomla?

Joomla! is what is referred to as a Content Management System (CMS) - or, perhaps more accurately, a Web Content Management System (WCMS).  It forms the structure of a web site, which is split into two sections - the front-end (what the public sees) and the back-end (what the site administrators see).

The front-end sections are divided into different sections on the screen (called "Modules") and different elements can be positioned pretty much anywhere on the screen.  The modules are generally controlled by "Components" - programs which allow different functions and features, such as user registrations or news feeds.

The beauty of Joomla! lies within its CMS.  Once a web site has been set-up, anyone with administrative privileges may add, change or remove content as they please - articles, news items, images - without needing any special knowledge or programs.  It's all done via the Joomla! back-end administrator pages.

Joomla! produces dynamically-generated content using PHP and HTML/CSS, and uses a single mySQL database.

What does it cost?

The Joomla! system is free under the GNU public license.  As it is open-source, it has massive development support and a community continually producing new and exciting components for the system - many of which are also free or low-cost.

The benefit of the system being free is that the cost-saving is passed on - all you pay for is the cost of development.
